Description

The Butera family’s property in the cool maritime region of South Gippsland was established on the western bank of the Bass River in 1983. The first vines were planted on their House Block, shortly after the close by but distinctly different River Block was planted too. Bass River produces Single Vineyard wines expressing variety, region and season. Viticulture is looked after by Pasquale “Pat” Butera, while son Frank takes the lead in the winery.

Ripe, floral and dark fruited. There is a savoury earthiness to this Pinot that I find really attractive.

Pinot Noir – This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.
