It is a little bit indulgent but gorgeous Pinot Noir.

Description

It is a little bit indulgent. A fuller style, with red fruits, plums and toasty oak. A hint of smoke is evident too. The palate his nice silk and great length. The tannins are fine and elegant. Still young, this wine will have a lot to offer for a long time. I would highly recommend burying some bottles for another 7 or so years. Match with something pretty bold such as venison.

Planted in 1989 on a property 15 kilometres inland from Bicheno on Tasmania’s East Coast, Apsley Gorge Vineyard is a dedicated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producer and they are trying their very best to make Grand Cru quality wines from their beautiful base. To great success in my opinion. If you ever get there, go during crayfish season and spend an afternoon at their outlet.

Tasmania

The beautiful Island south of the Australian mainland that has carved out a reputation for quality sparkling wine and Pinot Noir. Tasmania’s cooler climate regions and longer growing season make it perfect for aromatic styles of wine. A wealth of quality focussed producers have held lift the status of the whole island.

Pinot Noir

This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.
