Description

From the best fruit of their Sommerberg Grand Cru vineyard. On first look it seems simple and mute but with time open, or preferably time in the cellar, you’ll see it blossom and change into one of the most glorious Rieslings you’ll ever try. Leave it for 10 years or longer.

Domaine Albert Boxler is a 300 year old family run domaine in the high Alsace village of Neidermorschwihr. Today the domaine is run by Jean Boxler, Albert’s grandson. This is one of Alsace’s most prestigious addresses with a global reputation as a producer of some of the region’s finest wines. Their 13 hectares of vineyards rate amongst the best holdings in Alsace with over 80% Grand Cru rated, shared among the Sommerberg and Brand Grand Crus.  The wines are made naturally fermentations take place in a mixture of old wooden foudre and smaller stainless tanks. Jean keeps each parcel separate and does not necessarily blend them so the range changes slightly from year to year. Jean prefers to retain acidity in his wines so they tend to be drier. They are dense, complex and juicy but maintain their elegance. The quality of their vineyards and the skill of the Boxlers translates into some of the most exciting and potentially longest lived wines, especially Rieslings, in Alsace.

Riesling – One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.

Alsace – Currently a French territory after coming under German rule twice during the wars the Alsatians tend to think of themselves as being from Alsace first. Their language, culture and wines are all somewhat removed from the rest of the world. For instance, when it comes to aromatic whites no one can compare. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris to name but a few all excel in this cold border region. Some wines can be expensive for the quality but the production quantities mean there are still many bargains to be had.
